DON’T FLY YOUR PLANE TO EUROPE

Here is an issue that will most definitely interest those pilots and aircraft owners contemplating taking their aircraft to Europe. DON’T!

Effective 4/30/05 the European Union (EU) has mandated extremely high limits, currently unavailable in the American insurance marketplace. For example, a Cessna 182 would be required to carry almost $5,000,000 of liability coverage, plus war and terrorism endorsements. Apparently AOPA is trying to negotiate with an American company (probably AIG) to provide those limits.

Considering that fuel prices are far in excess of what we pay, and the fact that no one is apparently motivated to provide operations in Europe with reasonable insurance costs, I would suggest we keep our planes at home. We were the ones attacked on 9/11. This contorted reasoning is punishing the victims, while not adding anything to each country’s security.
