SUMMER FLYOUT, GENEVA, ILLINOIS – August 26 – 29, 2004

I hope you have the USPA Summer Flyout on your calendar by now. And you need to make your room reservation and send in your registration form now, also. The sooner the meeting planners know how many are coming, the better job they can do to help you have a great time.

All USPA members are invited to participate. And all board members (which includes the voting delegates from each state and local chapter) are needed to attend so that association business can officially be conducted. If you are a board member and cannot attend, please send me a proxy as soon as possible, or send one to a board member that you know will be attending. A proxy form follows the registration form for your convenience.

United States Pilots Association
SUMMER FLYOUT, GENEVA, ILLINOIS – August 26 – 29, 2004

Geneva is one of several Illinois towns that was built on the Fox River that runs north and south through the area about 60 miles
west of Chicago. It lies just south of DuPage Airport and about the same distance from the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
A manufacturing town using the Fox River, over the years, it has grown as an upscale bedroom community for Chicago, due in no
small part to the Union Pacific Railroad that connects from downtown Chicago and runs through Geneva on its way to the west.
The commuter service of the Union Pacific Railroad is now an integral part of METRA, the commuter rail service serving the
entire Chicago area.

The next neighboring town south of Geneva is Batavia. Batavia is the home of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which
is under the United States Department of Energy. FermiLab (for short) will be the site of the Thursday evening FAA Safety
Seminar and the Saturday morning board meeting of USPA. After our Saturday morning meeting and a “dutch treat” lunch at the
FermiLab cafeteria, we will have a tour of the 6,800 acre site followed by an exciting program about what the Lab does.
Plans for the meetings, seminars and social activities offer something for all USPA members and guests. See the Schedule of
Activities following for our plans for the weekend.

Airport and FBO: DuPage Airport (KDPA) Coordinates: N41-54.47 W088-14.92 Elevation: 758 msl. Approaches: ILS, GPS
RNAV and VOR_ Discounted fuel is available at a self-service, credit card operated fueling facility. We expect to have
complimentary parking available at the DuPage Flight Center, but have not yet received confirmation. Rental cars are available on
the field. Call DuPage Flight Center at 1-800-208-5690 or 630-208-5600 to reserve a car.

Transportation: Local transportation for all planned activities will be provided by members of the NEPA Chapter of the Illinois
Pilots Association. For those who want to obtain a rental car, see contact information above

Hotel: Comfort Inn Geneva, 1555 East Fabyan Parkway, Geneva, IL 60134. Phone 630-208-8811; Fax 630-208-7844. Website:

breakfast is included in the rate. Reservations must be made by July 31. (Tell them that you are with USPA to obtain this rate.)

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory: FermiLab is the home of the Tevatron, a one trillion volt atom smasher, the most
powerful in the world. FermiLab was approved for construction in 1965 to build a 200 GeV (200 billion electron volts) atom
smasher to study high energy physics. Over the years, major improvements have resulted in the Tevatron and its 1,000 GeV punch.
High energy physics scientists from the world over make use of this machine. It is believed that the energy level attained by the
Tevatron is the maximum needed to identify the smallest particle that present day theorists predict.

USPA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR EMERITUS RECEIVES HONOR

Arnold W. Zimmerman, Jr., a founding father of USPA and its Executive Director Emeritus, was inducted into the International Forest of Friendship at Atchison, KS, Saturday, June 19, at a ceremony held in a gazebo in the beautiful forest on the banks of the Missouri River. The International Forest of Friendship is a living, growing memorial to the World History of Aviation and Aerospace, and was a gift to America on her 200th birthday (1976) from the City of Atchison and the Ninety-Nines. It is made up of trees of all 50 states and 35 countries where the honorees live. Plaques naming the inductees are placed at the appropriate state or nation’s tree. Atchison is the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, who was the first President of the Ninety-Nines.

Arnold “Zim” began flight instruction in 1950 and earned his private license within five months. In three years he had earned an instrument rating, commercial license, and multi-engine rating. He has flown to many destinations all over the U.S. and made an Atlantic crossing. He has 5,700+ hours of flight time.

In addition to his efforts organizing the United States Pilots Association, Zim has worked hard to assist the Missouri Pilots Association become the largest state pilot’s organization in the U.S., and has also helped organize many other state pilot associations. He is the Co-Chairman of the Board of MPA.

USPA is proud to have Zim honored by the Forest of Friendship.

USPA MEMBER’S DAUGHTER CARRIES OLYMPIC TORCH

USPA member Neil Fiala of Ballwin, MO, and his wife Barb shared this heartwarming story with us, prior to the St. Louis portion of the Olympic Torch relay yesterday. Sometimes we just need to hear a little good news.
* * * * *
“We both want to pass on some great news to you. Our youngest daughter Terri Menghini was selected to carry the Olympic Torch in the St. Louis relay. We entered her name in the Coca Cola contest and out of thousands she was one of 40 selected for the St. Louis part of the relay. We had to write a 100 word essay of why she would be a good representative of the Olympic values.

Last night was a reception, where the runners (130 in all) received their instructions and uniforms. She will also be able to keep her torch. The relay begins at 1:00 PM today down at the Arch. Terri is running the leg tonight, in University City on Delmar, beginning at Cicero’s Restaurant to Blueberry Hill Restaurant, the heart of U. City. Her scheduled time is 8:08 PM. From there it is only about 1.5 miles to the cauldron in Forest Park. She is so excited and so are we. You are welcome to attend if you can.”
* * * * *
And then came Terri’s excited comments afterward.
* * * * *
“Can I say that this was THE NEATEST thing I’ve ever done in my life??? I thought the Boston marathon was cool, but this topped that by far. I was so excited and there were a ton of people along the route…… I’ve attached a photo for you to see. I cannot even put into words how neat the experience was.
Thanks,
Terri"

USPA MEMBER SERIOUSLY INJURED

Aviation Specialist Seriously Injured in Motorcycle Accident
by Jim Collom, President, Holley Mountain Chapter, USPA

Clinton AR -- I am sorry to report that late in May, Tim Posey, long-time airframe parts specialist with Arkansas Airframe of Clinton, Arkansas, while on his way home from a Christian motorcycling group meeting in Conway, Arkansas, late at night on his BIG Honda VTX-1800 motorcycle, had an accident with a couple of deer, only minutes from home.

At the time of this writing he is still in Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock (LIT), Arkansas.

He has undergone surgery to his left ankle and had over a liter of fluid drained from his left lung. He stayed a few days on a ventilator to assist his breathing, but is now back to breathing on his own.

Tim spent over 14 years with us at Arkansas Airframe Inc. We saw him start as the young shy boy that was hired to pull parts and, in a rather short period of years, watched him grow into a man that ran our complete parts division.

Tim graduated from Shirley Arkansas High School and continues to reside in his hometown. He tried college for a while, but soon discovered that aviation was his ONLY interest. He started flight training while in college and later earned his private pilot’s license locally, at the Clinton Airport, where he continues providing airframe parts specialty services for Dawson Aircraft.

When we sold the parts division of Arkansas Airframe Inc. to Will Dawson, owner of Dawson Aircraft Inc., in February 2003, Tim was given the option to stay with us, managing the Holley Mountain Airpark office. However, Tim knew his calling. His heart was in airframe parts sales, loving to deal and talk aviation with aviation people. His choice was clear; he became a full time employee of Dawson.

Tim has not only been a model as to what a dedicated employee should be, but he is one of the most honest, friendliest & kind persons you will ever have the opportunity to meet. When we took on new projects, such as Holleyfest and the USPA AR01 chapter, he would dedicate, on his own time, many hours of extra work just to make sure it was the best it could be. I remember seeing lights on in the office late one night and stopping in and finding him printing out graphics for signs that he thought would help the people that visited Holleyfest that year.

Tim is now, as a result of the accident, complications and surgery, dealing with the hallucination monsters of morphine and other pain medicines. Tim has never been in this condition or for that fact he has never been hurt in anyway before now.

Hospital care has depleted Tim’s medical insurance, so his friends and aviation buddies have set up a special assistance account for donations to help this guy that has so much helped so many for so long with our mutual love in aviation. Tim is a great guy and deserves our support. Hope you see fit to join us in assisting. Donations can be mailed to: Timothy Posey Special Medical Fund, c/o First Service Bank, Attn: Kelly Bradford, P.O. Box 1589, Clinton, AR 72031.

For more information, contact Jim Collom, 501-745-8700 and/or Will Dawson, 501-745-5300.

JAN'S JARGON

A note out of the “Maintenance File.”

Remember, you really only need two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should, use the WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, use the duct tape.

L&K,
Jan
