This information just in from Don Smith in Denton who has set up a Saturday tour in conjunction with the DTO Flyout this weekend:

We are set up for a Saturday afternoon tour of the Ft.Worth Super FSS. Starting time is 2:30. I'll have maps and other instructions at the safety seminar and in our hospitality room.
It is easy to find. If you don't want to wait for my maps, go to Google or Map quest and type in 5300 Alliance Gateway Fwy, Fort Worth, Tx 76177-3704 and you will get good instructions. The Holiday Inn address is 1434 Centre in Denton (if you spell it center it won't get recognized and you'll get very strange information-don't ask why I know) if you want travel times and miles.

This Saturday, 10 November at the Gallup airport (GUP), NMPA will present a FAASTeam Safety Seminar from 10 am to noon. The seminar will be followed by a free noon pizza meal at the seminar.
The two topics will be, "Pilot Decision-Making or Why Smart People Do Dumb Things" and "The Latest in FAA Technology That Will Impact Pilots". The presenter will be Ron Keller, a FAASTeam Representative. You may contact him at 505 856 4940 or at radarpapa182@yahoo.com.
This safety seminar will count for either the old FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program or the new FAASTeam WINGS program, your choice. The old WINGS program will cease on 31 December this year. If you want credit for the new FAASTeam WINGS program you must be registered on www.faasafety.gov and also have registered on the SPANS portion of www.faasafety.gov for this seminar.
This will be the last safety seminar that NMPA will present in 2007. The next seminar will be at the Deming airport (DMN) on Saturday 12 January 2008 from 10 am to noon and the topic will be Survivability. It will focus on what area pilots should have in their planes to survive a crash in the wilds, until rescued, and how to use their survival equipment. There will be examples of survival equipment some of us carry in our planes. The presenter will be Bob Worthington, a FAASTeam Representative, a former US Army Escape and Evasion Instructor and former Survival Instructor for the Civil Air Patrol. He can be contacted at 575 522 6785 or rworthin@zianet.com. After the safety seminar there will be a free Hamburg cookout.

Monday, November 5, Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), announced new proposed regulations concerning the across the border travels of small planes. While his main concern was corporate jets, his proposals do not distinguish between them and smaller GA aircraft. The apparent perceived problem is the "ability of GA and private aircraft flights being used to deliver illicit materials, or transport dangerous individuals, or worse, transport radioactive materials to be used in a terrorist activity."
First, I want to compare Mr. Chertoff to the former "Drug Czar" who tried this scheme under the premise we would stop drug entry into the country by small plane. We put up aerostats (balloons) in critical border areas, created "look over the horizon" radar that could and does see over the borders, and began flying AWACS P-3 aircraft supported by Blackhawk helicopters and Citation jets equipped with FLIR and fighter type radar. Has anybody noticed a reduction in drugs coming in from Mexico?
There are still small planes flying across the border, especially in southern Arizona. All they have to do is wait until the aerostat is down for maintenance or weather, and probably monitor public frequencies to know when a good time exists to launch. If you do not believe me, try flying the I-10 corridor from Las Cruces to Tucson to Yuma (I-8) working center, and see how many popups are given to you with no transponder return.
Then we have the drones. These are flying along the border areas, ostensibly looking for illegal crossers on the ground. One can only imagine when Mr. Chertoff takes control of these (remember, he is also Border Patrol and Customs & Immigration), and we end up with an oriental fire drill going on along the borders.
A set procedure for small planes flying to and from Mexico should be implemented with a minimum amount of delay for GA pilots. The premise of advance computer notifications should be eliminated as this is impossible in Mexico.
Mr. Chertoff exists solely because the people in our country that were designated to protect us failed miserably. Putting the burden on general aviation is no way to prevent a future occurrence. Creating another bureaucratic oligarchy is also not in the public's best interest either.
In my opinion it is another means by which the government is forcing us to fly on the airlines. Less bother you know. Oh yes, your names will be on a manifest that is submitted to DHS before flight time. If your name is John Smith and someone with the same name appears on their "hit" list, imagine the fun day you are about to have.
